Does SEO still matter if people search with AI?
Last updated 20 August 2026
SEO still matters, but it is no longer sufficient. Google rankings and AI-generated recommendations are produced by different systems reading different signals, so a business can rank first for a search term and never be named when AI is asked the same question. Much of the technical foundation overlaps, but AI answers weight structured data, direct question-answering content and third-party corroboration far more heavily than page position.
The short version: your SEO investment is not wasted, and it is not enough.
Where the two overlap
Plenty of good SEO work also helps you get cited. A crawlable, fast site. Accurate business information. Real reviews. Claimed listings. If you've done that work, you're ahead of most.
Where they diverge
| Traditional SEO optimizes for | AI answers depend on |
|---|---|
| Keyword search volume | Question phrasing — a question asked 20 times a month you're the only clear local answer to can be worth more than a high-volume term where you're one of forty results |
| Ranking position | Citation eligibility — whether you're quotable at all |
| Your own website | The wider web — roughly 77% of cited sources are third-party |
| Clicks to your site | Being named in an answer the user may never click through from |
Why "we rank #1" stops being reassuring
A results page shows ten options and lets the searcher choose. AI choosess first and presents two or three. Position ten on Google still gets seen occasionally. Position four in AI's internal shortlist doesn't exist — there's no page two to be on.
This is why the businesses that have invested most heavily in local SEO are often the most exposed. Their advantage is real, but it lives entirely inside a system that a growing share of customers is routing around. In 2026, 45% of consumers report using AI tools to find local businesses; a year earlier that figure was 6%.
What to do about it
- Keep the SEO. Search isn't going away, and the foundations are shared.
- Add answer pages. Take the questions customers actually ask you and answer them in plain language, one page per question, answer in the first forty words.
- Add structured data. It's the difference between a machine guessing what you are and knowing.
- Work on the off-site half. Listings, consistency, genuine inclusion in the roundups and communities AI reads.
None of that undoes your search work. It extends it into the system your customers are increasingly using first.
