Why isn't my business showing up in Google AI Overviews?
Last updated 20 August 2026
A business usually fails to appear in Google AI Overviews for one of four reasons: its website carries no structured data identifying what the business is, it has no page that directly answers the question being asked, its name, address and phone details are inconsistent across the web, or it lacks corroborating mentions on the third-party sites AI systems draw from. Ranking well in traditional results does not guarantee inclusion, because AI Overviews are assembled from a different mix of signals.
AI Overviews now appear on around 68% of local business queries — more often than the traditional local pack. So being absent from them is no longer an edge case; for many searches it's the main event.
Here are the causes we find most often, roughly in order of frequency.
1. Nothing tells the system what you are
No structured data means a machine has to infer your category, location and services from prose. It often can, but "often" isn't good enough when it's choosing three businesses to name. See how to add schema markup.
2. You never answered the question
An Overview is assembled from sources that answer the query. If the question is "how much does Botox cost in Los Angeles" and your site says only "we offer Botox — call for pricing," there is nothing to quote. The practice that published a price range gets cited instead.
Missing pricing in crawlable text is the single most common gap we find.
3. Your business details conflict across the web
"Acme Heating and Air" on your site, "Acme Heating & Air LLC" on Yelp, an old suite number on Bing, a tracking number on your Facebook page. Each conflict is a reason to trust you slightly less. Correcting these is one of the few local fixes that can show movement within about 30 days.
4. Nobody else is corroborating you
Roughly 77% of cited sources aren't the business's own website. If you're absent from the directories, review platforms, community threads and local roundups for your category, there's little to corroborate. Reddit alone is around 21% of AI Overview citations.
5. Your content is stale
Analysis of 17 million citations found AI-cited content averages about 26% fresher than typical ranking content. A site last meaningfully updated in 2021 is at a structural disadvantage regardless of how good it is.
How to check where you stand
- Ask AI the three questions your customers most often ask, with your city attached. Note which businesses get named and which sources are credited.
- Run your homepage through validator.schema.org.
- Search your business name in quotes and note every place your details appear — and whether they match exactly.
- Check whether any page on your site answers those three questions directly, with numbers.
That's the same sequence we run in our free breakdown, and you can do it yourself in about half an hour.
A caution on guarantees
Nobody can promise inclusion in an AI Overview. These systems change without notice and are controlled entirely by third parties. What can be promised is the work — the markup, the answers, the consistency, the corroboration — which is what determines whether you're eligible to be named at all.
