How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Last updated 20 August 2026

To be recommended by ChatGPT you need three things in place: structured data on your website stating unambiguously what your business is, where it operates and what it offers; pages that answer the questions customers actually ask in plain language, because AI quotes whoever wrote the answer down; and mentions across third-party sites, since roughly 77% of the sources AI cites are not the business's own website. Ranking well on Google does not achieve this on its own.

When someone asks AI "who's the best med spa in Newport Beach," it doesn't hand back ten links. It names two or three businesses. There is no second page, so a business is either in the answer or effectively invisible for that question.

What decides who gets named is not the same thing that decides who ranks. Here's what actually matters.

1. Can it tell what you are?

AI assistants need to resolve your business to an unambiguous entity — a specific company, in a specific place, offering specific services. Plain text on a page is ambiguous to a machine. Schema.org structured data is not.

At minimum you want a LocalBusiness node (or a more specific subtype like MedicalBusiness or HomeAndConstructionBusiness), Service nodes for what you offer, and AggregateRating if you have genuine reviews. Most local business websites have none of it.

The related signal is consistency. If your phone number is formatted one way on your website, another on Yelp, and a third on your Facebook page, you look like three different businesses to a system trying to corroborate facts about you.

2. Have you actually answered the question?

This is where most businesses lose, and it's the cheapest gap to close.

A services page is not an answer. Nobody asks AI about "Agnes RF" or "biostimulatory collagen induction." They ask "how much does Botox cost in Los Angeles" and "how long does lip filler actually last." An AI assistant answering those questions quotes whoever wrote the answer down — and if that isn't you, it's a competitor.

Two things make an answer quotable:

3. What does the rest of the web say about you?

This is the part that surprises people. Analysis of more than 23,000 AI citations found roughly 77% came from sources other than the business's own website — directories, review platforms, community threads, local roundups. Reddit alone accounts for around 21% of AI Overview citations.

Which means you can have a technically perfect website and still lose, because AI is mostly reading about you somewhere else. Claimed and consistent listings on Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and your industry's directories are the foundation. Genuine inclusion in local "best of" roundups is the upgrade.

What doesn't work

How long it takes

Structured data and answer pages can be crawled within days to weeks. Citation and listing corrections often show movement within about 30 days. Entity strength — the compounding kind — builds over months. Anyone promising you a guaranteed citation on a date is guessing, for the same reason nobody could ever guarantee a #1 Google ranking.
